Literacy Champions Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Katzie Community Literacy Committee: The MRPMK Community Literacy Committee’s mission is to promote and support adult, community and family literacy and to coordinate literacy initiatives in our communities. We have many volunteer opportunities for passionate literacy supporters including: community outreach, book labeling and tutoring. Volunteer literacy tutors help other adults improve their reading, writing, math, computers or English-speaking skills. Free training is provided. Equestrian Support North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association: NFTRA is searching for program volunteers to assist with grooming, feeding, tacking up, leading horses and side-walking with riders during lessons. Youth Restorative Justice Volunteer mentors are needed to engage in meaningful and supportive relationships with youth and young adults ages 12 to 24. Mentors provide encouragement, support, and guidance to youth while assisting them to complete their Youth Restorative Justice Agreements. Preschool Helpers Family Place Community Parenting Centre Family Place offers parent and tot programing for children 0-5 years, Monday through Thursday. Volunteers are needed to assist instructors in the classroom and support parents who may be attending with multiple children. The program is an opportunity for parents to enjoy positive one-on-one time with their children and an extra pair of hands to hold a baby or help with crafts is very valuable. Technical students who could host Wii bowling or golf, or give small presentations on “What is – twitter, tinder, email, facebook, instagram etc? Students interested in nursing or psychology who could do one to one visits, go out on bus outings, assist the Recreation Therapist in our small Care Unit or host simple support groups on emotions or general topics of interest.
